Planning a wedding can be a daunting, expensive endeavor. You have to consider venues, photographers, dresses, rings, table settings, decor, food, music… I get it. There’s a lot.

According to TheWeddingReport.com, the average cost of a wedding in the Metro-Milwaukee area is $30,944. Looking at Chicago, that number can move up to $40K+! Needless to say, where your money is going is important. Below I’ve compiled a list of what to expect for price ranges in the greater Midwest for videographers, and what services you can expect.

The “Friend” Videographer

  • Entry-level equipment

  • No audio recording capabilites

  • A minimal portfolio

  • Delayed e-mail responses

  • Dressed in a T-Shirt and Shorts (yes, this has happened)

  • No gear or liability insurance

  • No contract

  • No legal music

  • Finished product is shaky, lackluster, and not properly exposed

Price Range: $1000 or less

The “On The Side” Videographer

  • Mid-level equipment

  • Possibly external microphone

  • Improved customer service skills

  • Moderate portfolio, lacking passion

  • Wears dressy clothes

  • Possibly has insurance

  • No contractual terms which protect you

  • Finished films lack depth and aren’t unique

  • Books 6 months or less in advance

Price Range: $1000 - $2500

The Professional Videographer

  • High degree of technical knowledge and experience

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Professional equipment

  • Stabilization equipment (gimbals, etc)

  • Wireless audio

  • Professionally, but functionally dressed

  • Large portfolio

  • Fully insured

  • Films that embrace videographer’s style

  • Books 6-18 months in advance

Price Range: $2500 +

While this is generalized, the main takeaway here is that you truly “get what you pay for”. I made the mistake of not hiring a videographer for my wedding, and I regret that mistake deeply. Make sure to look at various videographers, compare their services, and find one whose work you feel will embody the spirit of your wedding day.
